Institute for Teaching and Learning Advancement

Introduction

The Institute for Teaching and Learning Advancement (ITLA) was established to promote enhanced student learning through the development of scholarly teaching, assessment and curricula design.

The Institute comprises three units:

  • Face-to-Face (F2F) Tutoring Learning and Support
  • Online Tutoring Learning and Support
  • Assessment Support

ITLA focuses on the important activities of teaching, learning and assessment. It is committed towards ensuring all tutors, whether F2F tutors or e-tutors, are well-trained since they bear the great responsibility of assisting learners. It also strives to provide quality assessment so as to produce quality graduates.

Objectives

  • Advance the practices in teaching, learning and assessment for learners
  • Manage tutor affairs including coordinating the hiring/ recruitment, training, evaluation and monitoring, and development of all tutors

Assessment Support Unit

It is responsible for ensuring the quality of assessment to improve student learning. This includes making sure that questions for examinations and assignments are of high quality. Various assessment modes are offered and subject matter experts can select the appropriate mode based on the learning outcomes of their courses.

The latest development in course assignments is the use of authentic assignments with rubrics, online submission of assignments and centralised grading.

Online Tutoring Learning and Support Unit

It oversees all aspects of online learning related to online facilitation, resources and online support.

It manages the following areas:

  • Management of online tutors (e-tutors) and fully online programmes
  • Training in managing and conducting forum discussions
  • Monitoring and evaluation of e-tutors
  • Support and continued development of e-tutors via an online community area (e-Tutors Community), monitored and facilitated by the head of the E-learning unit
  • Management of online learner support centres.

Face-to-Face Tutoring Learning and Support Unit

It oversees all aspects of face-to-face learning which are related to tutors and tutorials.

It manages the following areas:

  • Face-to-face (F2F) tutor management related functions such as training and materials for new tutors and retraining for senior tutors
  • Schedule for tutor monitoring at least once every semester
  • Facilitation of online community as a platform for discussion among F2F tutors
  • Provision of ontinuous support and improvement in teaching and learning practices
  • Enhancement of tutor quality to ensure that learners receive quality learning
