After more than a year of lockdowns and working from home, we are prone to experiencing work-related burnout, losing focus, and becoming emotionally fragile.

This feeling of helplessness is affecting many of us but it is not really the end of the world. Powering through is the only option we have during these challenging times, so here are some workplace-friendly tips to help bring out the superhero in you.

Engage in self-reflection.

Take time regularly to assess yourself and your ways of working. When you engage in this deliberate thinking about your own strengths, weaknesses, worries, values, and priorities, you will be aware of your actions and decisions in the workplace. If you wish to improve yourself at work, self-reflection is necessary as it is the basis for personal growth. Personal development will help you make better decisions, find work satisfaction, understand how to meet goals, and make meaningful contributions to your organisation.

Practise humility.

C.S. Lewis once said, “Humility is not thinking less of yourself, it’s thinking of yourself less.” In other words, being humble is a quality we need to strive for. Practising humility at work helps you build true self-confidence, resilience, ability to adjust in tough situations, and willingness to listen to negative feedback or criticism. As a humble employee or leader, mistakes become learning opportunities, and you can turn them into something positive and innovative. An act of genuine humility also helps cultivate strong social relationships, helpfulness and forgiveness among co-workers. Work hard, stay humble!

Set professional goals.

Setting goals helps you focus on the big picture and contributes to career success. After all, goals provide vision and clarity, and this provides a sense of purpose and the urge to improve. Bear in mind that goals must be realistic. Figure out what you want to accomplish in a day, week, month and year. Then stick to the plan and work your way to accomplish them. You will learn a lot along the way. If you want sustainable success, start with setting goals and work smart to achieve them. This is how you can grow and be the best at work.

Prioritise your mental and physical health.

You can only bring out your best self at work when you are physically, mentally, and emotionally healthy. It’s normal to feel overwhelmed when your work demands constant attention. But a job is just a job. Set boundaries so that you don’t spread yourself too thin. You can’t give your best at work if your health deteriorates. Think about what really matters to you and find ways to get help when necessary. Last but not least, always get a good night’s sleep as it is vital for your overall health.

Transform your career into a calling.

A Professor at Yale School of Management Dr Amy Wrzesniewski has established three different contexts of work, namely, job, career and calling. Those who experience work as a calling feel a personal and emotional connection because their work is closely connected to their purpose and values in life. Unsurprisingly, these individuals are often the most satisfied with what they do. Incorporating your purpose and passion in your vocation requires a voyage of self-discovery. There’s no better time than now to learn more about yourself, personality traits and beliefs.

American architect, designer, writer and educator Frank Lloyd Wright said, “I know the price of success: dedication, hard work and an unremitting devotion to the things you want to see happen.” Find out what works for you, know your true self and you’ll awaken the superhero in you. All the best in finding the best version of yourself in your calling!
