OUM President/Vice Chancellor

PROFESSOR DR AHMAD IZANEE AWANG

Professor Dr Ahmad Izanee Awang is the President/Vice-Chancellor of Open University Malaysia (OUM). With 3 decades of experience in education and management, he has served at several public and private higher education institutions before joining OUM in 2006.

An adult education and educational leadership expert, Prof Izanee began his career at OUM as the Director of a Learning Centre in November 2006. In 2014, he became the Head of the Assessment and Examination Division. 

Due to his expertise in education management and vast experience in teaching and administration, Prof Izanee was appointed the Registrar in 2016. A promotion to the post of General Manager (Business Development and Support Services) followed in 2019. He became responsible for six major portfolios – business development, property development and maintenance, security, information technology, learning centres, and quality assurance. He gave particular focus to developing business opportunities and identifying potential new partners, particularly beyond Malaysia. 

Prof Izanee graduated with a Bachelor of Science (Mathematics) from the University of New South Wales in 1990, a Diploma in Education from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in 1996, a Master of Science (Educational Administration) from Universiti Putra Malaysia in 2001, and finally, a Doctor of Education from Universiti Selangor in 2012. He had also contributed his knowledge and expertise in developing the Malaysia Education Blueprint: 2015-2025 (Higher Education) in collaboration with the Ministry of Higher Education.

In August 1999, the Minister of Education invited Multimedia Technology Enhancement Operations Sdn Bhd (METEOR), a consortium of 11 public universities in the country, to set up an open university

Multimedia Technology Enhancement Operation Sendirian Berhad (METEOR Sdn Bhd) is incorporated. It is a consortium of the first 11 public universities in Malaysia. Its main aim is to develop multimedia technology applications for the education sector.

METEOR sets up OUM, as an open and distance learning university. It becomes Malaysia's 7th private university.

OUM was officially launched by the 4th Prime Minister, YABhg Tun Mahathir Mohamad

Tan Sri Dr Abdullah Sanusi Digital Library was launched by the Minister of Higher Education YB Tan Sri Dato' Seri Musa Mohamad.

Proclamation of the Second Chancellor YBhg Tun Jeanne Abdullah

Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) is introduced, replacing Flexible Entry.

METEOR Sdn Bhd receives an invitation from the Ministry of Higher Education to establish OUM.

OUM accepts its first batch of 753 learners in 4 programmes.

Proclamation of the First Chancellor, YABhg Tun Endon Mahmood and the First Convocation.

Proclamation of Pro Chancellor YBhg Tan Sri Azman Hashim. OUM becomes the first private institution of higher education to obtain approval from the Ministry of Higher Education to implement the Open Entry System. This allows OUM to admit learners based on assessment of their prior learning experience.
