OUM made waves at the 36th Asian Association of Open Universities (AAOU) Annual Conference in Istanbul, Turkey, which was held from 28 to 30 Sept 2023.
President/Vice-Chancellor, Prof Dr Ahmad Izanee Awang and 6 others – Prof Dr Santhi Raghavan, Assoc Prof Dr Nantha Kumar Subramaniam, Assoc Prof Dr Lim Chong Lim, Dr Md Rosli Ismail, Nurul Fizah Mohamad Nusran and Liana Mohamad took part in the event, resulting in OUM bagging 2 awards out of 121 paper presentations.
Dr Nantha Kumar clinched a gold award for “Leveraging Generative AI to Build a Bespoke Educational Chatbot” while Dr Lim secured a silver for “Problematizing Technological Solutionism in Open Universities: Perspectives Drawn Using the Method of Empathy-Based Stories”.
The AAOU conference, a hub for open and distance education in Asia, explored the theme of “The Future of Open Universities in the Age of Digitalized Higher Education.” The keynote speaker was the President and CEO of the Commonwealth of Learning, Prof Asha Singh Kanwar, one of the most prominent global proponents of learning for sustainable development.
The AAOU, established in 1987, aims to expand educational opportunities in Asia and enhance educational standards. The next AAOU conference will be hosted by Allama Iqbal Open University, Islamabad, Pakistan.
