We’re excited to announce that OUM is currently testing a new AI-powered tool to help our learners improve their writing skills. This innovative tool is provided by Studiosity, a global leader in education technology based in Sydney, Australia.

From October to January, our learners who are enrolled in selected courses will have the opportunity to use Studiosity’s Writing Feedback+ platform via OUMs myINSPIRE. This AI-powered tool analyses their written work and provides instant and personalised feedback to help them improve their assignments.

This has been made possible thanks to a US$5,000 international grant from Studiosity. The aim is to explore how ethical, AI-powered learning tools can boost student success and transform the learning experience, especially in Malaysia.

The Driving Forces Behind the Grant

Securing this significant grant was a collaborative effort by:

  • Project Advisor: Prof Dr Ahmad Izanee Awang, President/Vice-Chancellor
  • University Lead: Prof Dr Santhi Raghavan, Vice President/Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Learner Experience & Technology) and
  • Research Lead: Assoc Prof Dr Nantha Kumar Subramaniam, Deputy Dean, Faculty of Technology and Applied Sciences

Their shared vision is to harness AI in revolutionising the learning experience for OUM students.

What’s the Plan?

At the heart of this project are three ambitious goals:

  1. Research the Impact of AI: The team will rigorously assess how effective AI-powered academic writing feedback is in improving student writing skills.
  2. Elevate Student Success: By analysing how AI enhances grammar, punctuation, and writing style, the research aims to elevate academic performance and overall learning outcomes.
  3. Shape the Future of Education: The findings will inform future educational practices and policies, both at OUM and across Malaysia, demonstrating the true potential of AI in education.

How It Works

Here’s how OUM learners enrolled in the selected courses will experience this cutting-edge technology:

  1. Access to Writing Feedback+: Students will gain access to Studiosity’s platform from the myINSPIRE platform, which provides personalised feedback on their written assignments.
  2. Tailored AI Feedback: From grammar checks to style suggestions, the AI delivers insights that help students refine their writing skills.
  3. Data-Driven Results: Researchers will analyse data from these interactions to measure the platform’s impact on learning outcomes.

Why It Matters

This collaboration combines OUM’s expertise in open and distance learning with Studiosity’s technological innovation, offering a smarter, more efficient learning experience.

This research is a glimpse into the future of education – where AI doesn’t replace teachers but empowers students to learn more effectively.

While some may harbour concerns about AI misuse in academia, OUM is embracing this technology as a valuable tool for student success. By harnessing the power of AI, the University is committed to preparing students for a future where AI is a part of everyday life and work.
