Bachelor of Medical and Health Sciences (BMHS) with Honours programme provides an important platform for assistant medical officers to further their studies and obtain a higher level of qualification in their field.
This programme focuses on specific knowledge and advanced skills such as surgical and medical care, pre-hospital emergency care, occupational safety and health, trauma and emergency care, geriatric rehabilitation and palliative care. The distinctive courses in research and management provide opportunities for potential leaders and researchers to delve further in this field.
This programme develops both theoretical and practical skills that are crucial in developing the capabilities of to assistant medical officers, healthcare managers, supervisors, educators and practitioners. The programme is delivered via open and distance learning, making OUM the first university to offer this programme through a unique blended mode at combines e-learning, self-managed learning and face-to-face tutorials.

FAQs
- Can I work while studying?
Yes, you can work while studying, as this program is the first distance learning program specifically design for all current practicing Assistant Medical Officer both in government and private sectors. For those who is currently employed by the Ministry of Health Malaysia, you may apply the Cuti Kursus Sambilan (CKS) as stipulated in General Order (Perintah Am, Bab C) for clinical attachments later. - What is the language of instructions?
English is widely used, most of the courses are being teach in English. - Are there scholarship?
Currently OUM do not offer any scholarship. However, the Malaysian government and other non- governmental agencies offers scholarship / loans opportunities to talented students. - What is medical screening?
Medical screening is a health check that consists of a general examination by the examining doctor, blood, and urine tests as well as a chest x-ray examination.
A medical examination is required for all students who wish to enrol into this program. Students shall be certified medically fit by a registered medical practitioner recognized by OUM and free from:- Mental illness
- Physical and sensory disability
- Infectious diseases (HIV-AIDS, Hepatitis B and C, etc)
- Epilepsy.
- Genetic diseases.
- Drug abuse.
- What is the duration of this program?
The Bachelor of Medical and Health Sciences with Honours is a 11 semester program. However, if you already have the Diploma of Medical Assistant, you will be given 23 credit hours of credit transfer. - Is the Malaysia University English Test (MUET) required?
No. English subject will be taught in the University compulsory subject. - Who are the lecturers / tutors?
The lecturers and tutors, that are appointed by OUM, are experienced academician both in government and private tertiary education institutions in Malaysia and these academicians are registered Assistant Medical Officer with the Medical Assistant Board. Others will be registered clinical doctors and specialist. - I am a practicing Assistant Medical Officer, but I only have the Sijil Pembantu Perubatan. Can I apply for this program?
Yes, OUM offers an alternative entry to those students who do not fulfilled the normal entry requirement. You may apply for this program through Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning or in short APEL. APEL provides an opportunity for individual with working experience but lack of formal academic qualifications to pursue their studies in OUM. - What are the terms and conditions for prospective students besides the usual University entry requirements?
- You must be a registered Assistant Medical Officer with the Malaysia Medical Assistant Board.
- You must have the current Annual Practicing Certificate by the Malaysia Medical Assistant Board.
- At least or more than 1 year of working experience.
- You must have a Diploma of Medical Assistant.
- When can I apply?
January, May, and September - I am staying in Kota Bahru, Kelantan. Do I have to come to OUM Petaling Jaya to attend classes?
No. Currently this program is being offered in 9 Learning Centres throughout Malaysia including Sabah and Sarawak. Please refer to OUM website for further information on the location of these Learning Centres.
