We joined hands with the Korea National Open University (KNOU) to host the 2024 UNESCO-UNITWIN programme’s kick-off meeting in early March. The programme aims to enhance digital literacy among faculty members and students from different universities. UNITWIN stands for university twinning and networking scheme.

Held in Kuala Lumpur, the meeting involved representatives and researchers from 7 universities in 5 countries: OUM (Malaysia), KNOU (Korea), Mongolian University of Science and Technology (Mongolia), Tribhuvan University and Nepal Open University (Nepal), Hanoi Open University and Ho Chi Minh City Open University (Vietnam).

We hosted the five-day meeting from March 4 to 8 with KNOU, supported by the Ministry of Education, South Korea. Our guest of honour was Prof Dato’ Dr Mohammad Shatar Sabran, the CEO of the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA), who shared on its role in ensuring quality higher education in Malaysia.

At the meeting, best practices in assessment was the main agenda followed by planning the 2024 projects led by KNOU researchers and training programme on digital literacy conducted by KNOU. The participants also discussed potential international collaborations.

As part of ongoing efforts, KNOU is conducting digital literacy training for staff from the seven universities, supported by the Ministry of Education, South Korea. With the training our researchers received, they successfully conducted a workshop for a small group of teachers in Malaysia.

Moving forward, there will be local training programmes, a study on digital literacy programmes for schools, and a project on digital literacy for the public. These follow-ups aim to further enhance digital literacy and education opportunities for all.
